Analytical simulation engineer - PEM electrolysers

As analytical simulation engineer you will join the growing technology team responsible for the design of our new PEM electrolyser platform. You will be working developing a ground-breaking PEM electrolyser based on a patented and validated concept with drastically improved performance. You will be responsible for the development, maintenance, and application of multiscale models for simulation and control of the Hystar electrolysers, ranging from materials properties, cell and stack performance and system behaviour. The work will also involve use of models for development of digital twins and use of big data for control and continuous improvement of our products.

Both senior and junior candidates are considered as relevant for this position. Responsibilities and qualification requirements will be adjusted according to experience level, competence, and background.

Primary responsibilities and tasks:

  • Responsibility for managing and developing mathematical multiscale models in in collaboration with external partners, such as:
    • models coupling electrochemical, heat and mass transport processes within the Hystar electrolyser stacks (1D to 3D)
    • models for Balance of Plant components such as air humidifiers, gas separators, driers, pumps, etc.
    • models for predicting durability and lifetime of electrolysers under varying operational conditions.
  • Apply the multiscale models in the development of PEM electrolyser stacks and systems.
  • Definition and coordination of tests for model validation
  • Participate in selection and characterisation of components such as bipolar plate materials, sealings, porous transport layers and CCMs.  
  • Contribute to future technology and system development.
  • Contribute to other activities and support the rest of the Hystar team as required.

 

Qualifications/requirements:

  • MSc. or PhD level degree, preferably within Applied Mathematics, Chemical/Mechanical Engineering, Physics, Computer Science or similar
  • Previous PEM fuel cell, electrolyser or similar experience a strong advantage
  • Expert in simulation tools as ANSYS and/or COMSOL. Knowledge of open source platforms such as Openfoam is a plus.
  • Significant experience from modelling of electrochemical systems, multiphase flow, and thermodynamics
  • Experience in simulation tools (MATLAB/Simulink/Python/C++)
  • Competent with the use of 3D-CAD tools
  • Experience with Azure, Data Modelling, Machine Learning and predictive modelling is a benefit
